EcoFlow Smart Generator: Test and Review
Welcome to our personal test and review of the EcoFlow Smart Generator. Here's a detailed breakdown of the tests we conducted:
Decibel Levels
Measured the EcoFlow Smart Generator’s noise levels at startup and during charging.
Device Connectivity Tests
Connected the EcoFlow Smart Generator to a Delta 2 and Delta 2 Max via the extra battery port.
Tested the EcoFlow PowerStream with the Delta 2 while simultaneously connecting the Smart Generator to the remaining battery port.
Connected the EcoFlow River Pro and Delta Mini using the AC port.
Startup Options
Started the generator using the integrated start button, pull cord, and the EcoFlow app.
Smart Auto-Start/Stop Functionality
Configured and tested the generator's auto-start and stop feature, triggered by the battery levels of connected devices.
Decibel Levels
Ambient sound: Measured at 41 dB, capturing light road noise and the sound of a dog walking nearby.
Startup and running noise: The generator’s startup and running noise was recorded at 75.2 dB, which is noticeable but not overly disruptive in an outdoor setting.
Performance mode: During normal operation in performance mode, noise levels increased to 78.5 dB.
Charging mode: When the generator automatically switched to performance mode to charge an EcoFlow unit, the noise level peaked at 84 dB.
Vibration effects: Testing on a table contributed additional vibration noise, which may have slightly amplified the perceived sound levels.
Noise rating sticker: A sticker on the top of the device indicates a peak noise level of 96 dB.
Background Noise Levels
Ambient sound: Measured at 41 dB, including light road noise and a dog walking nearby.
Sound Levels During Operation
Startup and running: Recorded at 75.2 dB.
Performance mode: Increased to 78.5 dB during normal operation.
Charging mode: When the generator auto-switched to performance mode to charge an EcoFlow unit, the noise level further increased to 84 dB.
Vibration noise: The test was conducted on a table, which added some vibration noise to the readings.
Charging Performance
There were no issues with charging various EcoFlow units, including the River Pro, Delta Mini, Delta 2, and Delta 2 Max. The process began with connecting the EcoFlow Delta 2 Max using the extra battery ports, which automatically activated the charging of the Delta Max 2. The charging output fluctuated between 1400W and 1600W, likely due to the Delta 2 Max battery already being at a high charge level. Afterward, the Delta 2 was connected without any issues, showing similar performance. Similarly, the River 2 Max and Delta Mini, when connected via the AC port, also experienced no charging difficulties.
Charging Two EcoFlows Simultaneously
Devices tested: Delta Max at 95% and another EcoFlow unit at 98%.
The generator’s effort to handle this dual charging load was noticeable, as the sound and performance load increased.
Delta 2 Performance: The Delta 2 required the most power and was charged to 100%. Once swapped out for the Delta Mini (at 94%), the generator diverted its power to bring the Delta Max from 95% to 96%, at which point it cut off charge to that unit.
Continuous cycling issue: The Delta Max’s charge would quickly drop back to 95%, causing the generator to kick back on almost immediately. This repeated cycle created a somewhat frustrating experience, akin to someone revving an engine repeatedly.
Suggested improvement: Allowing a 5% drop before reactivating could provide respite from the loud performance noise and improve user experience.
Final Test:
For this test, I connected the EcoFlow Smart Generator to one of the battery ports on the EcoFlow Delta 2 Max, then connected the EcoFlow Powerstream to the other battery port. This setup worked incredibly well. I set the Powerstream demand to the full 800W, and with no solar input, it maxed out at 623W.
Here’s where things got interesting: I had configured the Smart Generator’s auto start/stop range between 0% and 95%. While the Powerstream was supplying 623W to the house from the main battery, every time the EcoFlow Delta 2 Max battery dropped below 96%, the generator would automatically turn on. Once the battery reached 96%, the generator would then turn off.
However, when I connected the Delta Mini to the AC port, the generator did not auto turn off as expected. But when the charging power dropped to around 200W—due to the EcoFlow Mini being at 99%—the Smart Generator noticeably reduced its performance, which was audible.
EcoFlow Smart Generator – Noise Level Test
In this video, we test the EcoFlow Smart Generator’s noise levels during different stages of operation. From startup to charging mode, you’ll hear how the generator performs in terms of sound. We measured decibel levels at various points: 75.2 dB during startup, rising to 84 dB while charging, and reaching up to 96 dB in performance mode.
This video provides a real-time look at how the EcoFlow Smart Generator’s noise compares to typical outdoor sounds, helping you assess whether it’s the right choice for your power needs without being overly disruptive.
Final Thoughts:
After thoroughly testing the EcoFlow Smart Generator, I would highly recommend it. The seamless integration with various EcoFlow devices, including the Delta 2 Max, Delta Mini, and Powerstream, makes it a reliable and efficient power solution. The generator’s auto start/stop functionality works well, ensuring that it operates only when needed, which helps minimize noise and fuel consumption. Additionally, the ability to charge multiple devices simultaneously without any issues is a huge plus.
The Smart Generator’s performance, particularly in scenarios where it adjusts to the power demands of different EcoFlow units, was impressive. While some minor optimizations could be made to improve the cycling behavior when charging two units at once, overall, it’s a fantastic tool for keeping your devices powered in remote or off-grid situations. The noise levels are reasonable considering its power output, and the generator’s smooth shutdowns and auto features make it user-friendly.
If you’re looking for a reliable, efficient, and quiet power solution for your EcoFlow ecosystem, the EcoFlow Smart Generator is a great choice.
